BMW Motorcycles announces new leadership

In an industry facing sluggish motorcycle sales, BMW Motorrad USA came into 2008 with January sales down 11.6% compared to the same month last year.

Officials at the German manufacturer announced BMW Motorrad USA will be led by Pieter de Waal (pictured right) as of April 1. Waal replaces Arturo Pineiro, who took the position of President of BMW, Central and South America.

Mr. de Waal, has been with BMW Group since 1994. He currently heads worldwide Sales and Marketing for BMW Motorrad in Munich. Prior to that he worked for BMW Group in Great Britain and South Africa as General Manager of BMW Motorrad and Technical Director of BMW Motorsport.

The United States served as BMW Motorrad's third largest sales market in 2007, eclipsed only by Germany and Italy.

BMW sold 102,467 motorcycles worldwide last year, up 2.4 percent from sales of 100,064 units in 2006. The OEM says it sold 21,504 motorcycles in Germany, 14,424 units in Italy, 12,094 units in the U.S. and 10,382 units in Spain.
